Don’t Become Frugal Obsessed

When it comes to frugal living, some of us have a dirty little secret. Or perhaps it isn’t as secret as we might think. Sometimes people can become so obsessed by living a frugal life style that it completely takes over everything that we do. Sometimes we wind up missing out on life’s wonder because we are too stressed out about saving each little penny. Being good stewards of our money is one thing, but we also have to keep things in perspective. Frugal living, challenging ourselves to get great bargains and save as much money as we can, can … Continue reading

Are You Too Focused on Your Child’s Looks?

Let’s face it, we are a society that is obsessed with youth and external looks can seem incredibly important. As parents, it can also be hard NOT to focus on what our children look like—are they wearing the “right” clothes? Do they have the “right” haircut? Are their teeth straight? Is there a line that we cross, however, between what is reasonable and what is obsessive? Recently, I was talking to a parent whose child has just been diagnosed with eczema. One of my own children had allergies when she was a preschooler that manifested itself with eczema so I … Continue reading

How Often Does Your Mate Give You Gifts?

My husband is not big on gift giving or many romantic acts. He is a country boy. However when he does come out with something thoughtful, it means the world to me because I know that it was not in his nature. I know that he had to put a lot of thought and work into the process. I see women who are always being pampered with new items and such from their partner. I have often wondered if they come to expect gifts from their mate. If so, the gifts must have a lot less meaning to the women … Continue reading

What Hairstyle Does Your Man Prefer on You?

Some women spend a great deal of time and money on their hair. They have regular hair appointments and buy many hair products. Many women are now even purchasing hair straighteners for up to $150.00. Do women spend this time and money to impress men or to make them fell good. I think it is a little of both. My hair is naturally curly. It is unruly and has no style. It styles itself. While I like my hair to some extent because it gives me “character” and is now the trait given to my daughter, I have also always … Continue reading

Analyze This

You know that dream where everyone in the world hates you, but somehow you gain an invitation to compete on Iron Chef America where the secret ingredient is barley and one of the guest judges is Anderson “I love me some Crack Pie” Cooper, and you burn fish so badly that it looks like chicken until you pull back the skin and a sea of pin bones are revealed, and suddenly the entire kitchen goes up in flames… What do you mean you don’t remember that one? I get that one all the time, which probably explains why my 8-year-old … Continue reading

Are You Embarrassed by Using Coupons

Have you ever been embarrassed when someone finds out that you use coupons? I used to be very proud of the fact that I put in the effort to save money. I would, ahem, brag about my savings, or at least show them to others in my enthusiastic efforts to get them to convert to couponing. Now lately, though, I tend to be a little embarrassed. For one, there has been a lot of bad press about couponers, thanks to the extreme couponing show. There has been a lot of lumping every couponer into “crazy.” Not all of use have … Continue reading

Silly Sounds of the Season

Have you seen the Wal-Mart Christmas commercial where the guy insists on playing “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer” while an elderly woman wearing a leg cast looks on in disgust? I walk out of the room whenever it’s on. Conversely, my 7-year-old loves the TV ad almost as much as her beloved “Peggy” commercial. Tis the season for crazy Christmas carols. Only this year my kid finally gets the joke and is obsessed with committing the holiday parodies to memory. Grandma, help me! Along with the granny versus caribou carol, my daughter delights in Bob Rivers’ twisted holiday … Continue reading

Christmas Shopping for a Camera Phone

Thanks to modern technology, you can take pictures anywhere at anytime without hauling around a huge camera. In fact, you don’t have to haul around a traditional camera at all to snap frame worthy shots. All you need is a cellphone or other mobile device with built-in camera technology. The latest and greatest versions are equipped with sophisticated picture-taking capabilities that rival basic point-and-shoot cameras, though it wasn’t always this way. A few years ago camera phones were more about novelty than substance and the photos often came back blurry or pixilated. However, a lot has changed in the last … Continue reading

Countdown to Christmas… Toys

Thankfully, my young daughter hasn’t begun her annual countdown to Christmas. Or as it is referred to around our home: “Honey, be careful with that Sharpie when you cross off the days on the calendar!” Such was not the case last year, when she started begging Santa for Zhu Zhu Pets at the beginning of September. This year (thankfully) my child is not obsessed with one toy in particular; rather, she wants a few toys from each aisle of Toys R Us. We’ll see if Santa delivers. In the meantime, despite being more than two months out from the official … Continue reading
