The Shocking Verdict of Casey Anthony

On Tuesday I watched the live broadcast of the verdict being read for Casey Anthony. As was the case for most people, I was stunned when I heard “Not Guilty.” Poor little Caylee Anthony won’t see justice done…at least not this side of things. Facebook got very active, lots of thoughts and opinions. Most people can’t wrap their minds around the verdict but others believe the circumstantial evidence wasn’t enough and that the prosecution reached too high in making this a death penalty case. Then of course there is the whole thing of not knowing what exactly caused her death. … Continue reading

Pregnancy and Depression

People discuss post-partum depression rather openly nowadays; as someone who had 3 children I can feel for those who have experienced it, as I had my moments. I was happy to hear when actress Brooke Shields came forward with her experience, because she helped normalize something some still felt they had to suffer in silence with. Yet something that we do not hear about often is the depression some women feel while they are pregnant, so I was glad when I found some research discussing this very important issue. Isn’t pregnancy supposed to be the happiest time in a woman’s … Continue reading

Foster Care Problems

There is a sad reality in America when it comes to how children are treated rather mistreated in the foster care system. Children that are placed in foster care already have strikes against them. The children have either been physically, mentally or sexually abused, they have lost their biological family and been placed with strangers. Shouldn’t the foster homes that they are placed in be the absolute best that it can be? Should the children in foster care have to be mistreated by a person who just wants the checks? The horror stories that you hear about foster children being … Continue reading

Botox Daughter Removed from Home by Social Services

So the other day I blogged about kids getting Botox and I mentioned the interview done with a mom who has been giving her 8-year-old daughter Botox injections. Since then, the child has been taken away by Social Services. Apparently complaints began pouring in, which resulted in an investigation and then a determination that the child should be removed from the home. Now I have a few thoughts on this. First, why would any mother take the chance and put herself out there in the public eye to brag about the act of giving her daughter Botox? You would certainly … Continue reading

Parent Training 2

When you are going through the training you will learn about first aid, child proofing, how to discipline and it will also cover the sensitive issues that you may not think about. Some of the children in foster care have been physically, mentally or sexually abused. Part of the parent training will cover how to identify and help the children through the abuse. The stories you will hear and the pictures you will see are sure to tear at your heart, I mean how can you not be affected? When you see pictures of a sweet innocent child malnourished, with … Continue reading

When Outing Your Father for Child Rape Breaks Up Your Family

Sadly fathers do rape their own children and sometimes they even rape their infant children. They can even rape several daughters over a period of years. Although this is a crime involving a prison sentence, many perpetrators go undisclosed. There are many reasons for this, the predominant one being fear. Children notoriously keep quite about sexual abuse because, depending on their age at the time of abuse, they may not even be aware that what is happening to them is abuse. Many adult women who were sexually abused by their fathers do go on to report that abuse to the … Continue reading

Adoption Considerations when you Already Have Children: Safety

When you already have children, your adoption decisions will have to take them into account as well. In my last blog I mentioned the effect that spacing of children and adopting out of birth order can have on your family. This blog continues the discussion of things to think about when planning for second or subsequent children. When you consider age and special needs of the child you can adopt, and when you consider the referral of a specific child, you must consider your responsibility to the children you already have. First, you must consider safety. A child who has … Continue reading

Infant Attachments Influence Romantic Attachments

As many of you know, I have been an avid reader of Beth’s story in Mental Health about Sue who refused to have sex with her husband until she wanted to get pregnant. It turned out that Sue had been sexually abused as a child and was greatly affected by the experience. Our history and background do indeed have a great deal of influence over how we respond to our mate and others around us. Knowing your partner’s childhood history may turn on a few lights for you about why he or she acts the way that he or she … Continue reading

Help Your Child to NOT Look Like a Victim

We teach our children not to talk to strangers and about various aspects of stranger safety and awareness, but we might not know that we can coach our children to physically appear more “together” and less likely to be a victim. I am not talking about harping and harassing a child to “look tough”—but there are things that we can do as parents to help our children learn how to NOT appear like a victim. Years ago, when my younger sister was in college, she took a self-defense class geared toward young women. She learned a great deal about how … Continue reading

Signs of Abuse in a Toddler Too Young to Talk

This is a blog I don’t want to write. It is unthinkable to much of the human population to abuse a child, let alone a baby. And yet, for some pedophiles, abusing a toddler (or infant) is ideal because they can’t tell you what happened. This morning I read an article about a man who has confessed to sexually assaulting numerous children, including an 18 month old baby but who was been let go without a jail sentence. What’s worse is that although he has confessed to the assaults, he has used his position in his church to gain the … Continue reading
