October 2010 General Conference-Cleansing the Inner Vessel

Living in UT, specifically in Salt Lake City, where the church headquarters are located, we hear a lot of controversy between the church, and those that are opposed to the church. This past General Conference led to some protesting, and some heated debate here in Salt Lake City. I’m not sure who was actually debating (and I say that with only a little humor seeing as this is a serious issue), but there were a lot of people upset here in Utah about President Packer’s talk, Cleansing the Inner Vessel. The talk in a nutshell was about avoiding temptations with … Continue reading

Complaining to Your Spouse about In-Laws

Several different articles so far have addressed in-laws. We have discussed holiday dinners with difficult in-laws, living with in-laws, and other in-law scenarios. It is no doubt that in-laws have gathered a bad stereotype when it comes to marriage. In many cases it is thought that in-laws are not supposed to get along. Once married, women are thought to have to tiptoe around their husbands’ mothers and men are thought to be afraid of their wives’ fathers. Yet this does not always hold true, there are many in-law relationships out there that are perfectly great. However, even if you have … Continue reading

Living Too Close to Your Parents or In Laws

Deciding where you will live after you are married is a big decision. In a previous article, I discussed some of the hardships that can come from living with your parents or in-laws. However, living too close to your parents or in-laws can also be a problem. Whether or not you should move in next door to your parents or your spouse’s parents, depends a lot on the type of parents that each of you have. As Debra found out in Everybody Loves Raymond, living too close may not always be the best idea. She constantly has her in-laws checking … Continue reading

Living With In-Laws

Marriage can be a big adjustment for some couples. It can take time to learn to live with someone else without stepping on each other’s toes. Not having your own place can add even more to this confusion. Thankfully my husband and I have not had to live with anyone. However, I know many couples that in some point of their marriage they have had to live with their parents. Couples have to or choose to live with their parents for several different reasons. Sometimes a couple chooses to live with their parents to save money. They choose not to … Continue reading

Education Week in Review: August 4 – August 10

Unfortunately the education blog has been slow the past week. School is back in session and I have had a lot of preparing to complete. As soon as things are settled, I promise to be back in full force with lots of reporting! Saturday, August 4 Principals A principal has a very important job. The principal’s attitude greatly reflects on the attitude and environment of the school. Not only does a principal have to be educated on dealing with children, a principal also has to be aware of education laws, dealing with parents, and managing a team of educators. Monday, … Continue reading

Baby Blog Week in Review July 6 to July 15

Friday, July 6 Ask a Baby Blogger: Early Exposure to Allergens I answer the question whether or not you should avoid highly allergenic foods while pregnant or breastfeeding. Sunday, July 8 No More Pricks for Jaundiced Babies If you have had a baby who had jaundice more than a couple of years ago, it is likely that the poor little dear had to suffer through heel prick after heel prick in order to measure their level of bilirubin. Now, hospitals across the country are starting to get a machine that will make immediate diagnosis much easier. Hooray for the Transcutaneous … Continue reading

Ask a Baby Blogger: Extra Water for Breastfed Babies?

The question: It is so hot here, I think it was over 100 degrees yesterday. I breastfeed my 2 month old daughter. My mother in law told me that it was so hot I should give her some extra water out of a bottle to make sure she doesn’t get dehydrated. What is your opinion? My opinion is that your dear mother in law is operating on information that was taught to breastfeeding moms decades ago. You absolutely should NOT give your breastfeeding infant (especially if he’s feeding on demand) water unless it is directed by a pediatrician on a … Continue reading

Dealing with Difficult In-Laws (2)

Helena, as we remember, wanted to … Continue reading

Health Insurers Say Revealing Costs is Too Expensive

There is a part of the Affordable Care Act that will require all health insurance companies to provide consumers with information about the cost of a health insurance policy and what it covers. The America’s Health Insurance Plans lobby says providing this information would be too expensive for insurance companies. What happens now? When you see the phrase “Affordable Care Act”, it probably brings to mind some of the more controversial aspects of this series of health reform laws. You may be aware that the Supreme Court will hear a case this year that will determine if the individual mandate … Continue reading
