$5 Million Dollars Raised for Australian Bushfire Victims

by Beth McHugh | More from this Blogger

The rain poured down in Melbourne, Australia, but it didn't deter the crowds from attending the concert to raise money for the bushfires that have recently devastated the state of Victoria in south-eastern Australia. While over 200 people died in the bushfires, over 80, 000 people attended the concert in Melbourne, with a sister concert also celebrated in Sydney this weekend.

While the news is generally full of unpleasant natural events and the even less pleasant acts of man, today's headlines focus more on the good will of mankind where people come together to support other in financial and psychological need. Coldplay flew in from the UL to headline the concert which also featured Barry Gibb, Wolfmother, Kylie Minogue, Midnight Oil (headed by Australian Environmental Minister, Peter Garrett) plus a range of local bands and performers who have given their services free in order to offer hope and support to the devastated communities that where affected by the bushfires.

The concert in Melbourne will donate all monies to the Victorian victims while the Sydney concert will split its donations between the Victorian victims and the victims of the flooding in Queensland in north-eastern Australia. Despite the downturn in the economy, it s wonderful to see that people are still willing to donate money to those in distress as it is equally wonderful to see world class acts prepared to organize their time to get together to perform at such a concert. The fact that overseas acts also featured in the concert demonstrates not only the power of our Internet-based news system but the ability of people to feel empathy for those on other countries on the other side of the world. Not only was money raised during this concert, but donations have poured in form around the world as people heard of the terrible devastation of thousands of hectares of countryside, towns, villages and wildlife.

Gives us all hope for the benevolence of the human race.
